Dental tourism in Honduras is soaring to a record number, with tourists spending more than $1 million in a single year, the country’s tourism board said Thursday.
“In recent years, tourists from all over the world have come to Honduras and visited the island to enjoy its culture and traditions,” Tourism Minister Angel Marrero told the National Assembly.
Tourism in Honduras has grown to more than 1.6 million tourists a year.
More than 70% of the tourists are from the Americas, and they spend about $1.8 million a year on the island, according to the ministry.
Marrero said tourists spend more money than they did a year ago on their first trip to Honduras, when only 6% of tourists visited the country.
It’s a trend he hopes will continue as Honduras develops.
The island is now considered a destination for tourists.
Tourists are coming to Honduras to visit their families and friends, he said.
They also buy the products and services that are offered by the tourism board.
Last year, tourism reached $8.5 billion, the highest in history.
